The vocabulary, defined.
RWA (real-world assets)
Assets from the traditional world such as funds, bonds, credit, shares, property, and cash, brought onto a blockchain as tokens instead of being held only in paper or database records.
Tokenization
Turning ownership of an asset into a token on a blockchain, so it can be issued, held, and transferred digitally, with the rules and the record of ownership built in.
Blockchain
A shared digital record kept on many computers at once, with no single owner, where entries cannot be quietly changed. Also called a chain or a network.
Onchain
Something recorded and run directly on a blockchain instead of in a private company database. Anyone allowed to look can check it against the shared record.
Onchain finance
Finance where the asset, its rules, and its record of ownership all sit on a blockchain, so issuing, transferring, and settling all happen in the same place.
Orchestration
Coordinating many moving parts so they act as one, here, keeping an asset's rules, identity checks, and records working together smoothly across systems and chains.
ERC-3643
An open standard for tokens that represent regulated assets. The rules about who may hold or receive the token are built into the token, so every transfer is checked against them first.
Permissioned token
A token that can only be held or received by approved, verified people. The check happens automatically before any transfer goes through.
Permissionless token
An ordinary token that anyone can hold or send freely, with no approval needed. Good for open use, but not for assets that must stay within a verified group.
Identity
A way to prove who a holder is on a blockchain, using digital confirmations signed by trusted parties. It proves someone is eligible without putting their personal details on the blockchain.
KYC / AML
Know Your Customer and Anti-Money-Laundering, the checks a regulated business runs to confirm who someone is and that their money is legitimate before letting them transact.
Compliance
The rules and regulations a transaction has to follow. With smart contracts, those rules are written into the code, so it only allows transfers that meet them and blocks the rest.
Modular compliance
A flexible way of handling those rules, where each one (a cap on holders, a country restriction, a holding period) can be turned on, off, or combined, instead of being fixed in place.
Golden record
One official version of the truth that every other copy has to match. For an asset, it is the definitive record of who owns what and what is allowed.
Ledger
A record of transactions and balances. A blockchain is a shared ledger, one copy kept in step across the whole network rather than held by a single institution.
Cap table
The record of who owns an asset and how much they hold. Onchain, the token is this record itself, updating on its own as the asset changes hands, with nothing separate to reconcile.
Mint
Creating new units of a token and adding them to the record. It is the onchain version of issuing new shares or units of an asset.
Burn
Permanently removing units of a token from the record, for example when an asset is paid back or retired. It is the reverse of minting.
Cross-chain
Working across more than one blockchain at once, so an asset or a message can move between separate networks instead of being stuck on the one it started on.
Reconciliation
Checking that two or more records match and fixing any differences, so every copy of who-owns-what stays the same, including across different blockchains.
Compliance validation
A signed, one-time confirmation that a specific transfer is allowed. Other systems can rely on it without having to re-check every rule themselves.
Confidentiality
Keeping sensitive details such as balances, positions, and who is dealing with whom private, visible only to the people entitled to see them, not to everyone on a public network.
Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE)
A way of doing calculations on data while it stays encrypted, without ever unlocking it. Checks can run on the information while the actual values stay hidden.
Utility
What an asset can do once tokenized that it could not before, such as becoming easier to buy and sell, earning yield, being used as collateral, supporting lending and borrowing, and reaching new groups of investors.
